Michael Touchton
Fields: Comparative Political Economy
Research Interests:
I study comparative political economy with a particular interest in Latin American politics. My dissertation research focuses on the ways in which democratic political institutions promote or inhibit the rule of law. Specifically, I explore the various formal and informal constraints in systems of government and how they influence property rights, contract enforcement and equitable treatment by the judiciary--ultimately all critical elements for economic development. I address these issues through natural experiments in Mexico, Brazil and Argentina as well as aggregate, cross-national statistical analysis. I will defend during the fall semester, 2009. Additionally, I have taught seven upper-division, undergraduate courses in Latin American, SE Asian and African Politics as well as Global Development. I have extensive experience in the classroom, which along with my own graduate coursework qualifies me to teach courses in any other area of Comparative Politics or International
Relations.
