UNIVERSITY SUPPORT FOR ATTENDING CONFERENCES

There are four sources of funding outside the department for graduate students seeking to attend professional conferences. Requests can be made for funding to the Chancellor's Office, the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Dean of the Graduate School. The first three funding sources are unable to guarantee funding every year to every student. But the College of Arts and Sciences and the Graduate School are each able to offer financial support to graduate students once per fiscal year (July 1-June 30).

The Graduate School offers annual awards of $125. In order to request an application for Graduate School funding, contact Mary Lowe (Fellowship Coordinator) at extension 2-6143. You will receive a check directly from the Graduate School assuming your request has been approved.

The Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences offers annual awards of $150. Once your request has been approved, the funds are transferred to a Department account in the Bahamas...Just kidding....and you will be reimbursed by the department upon your return up to the amount to which your were funded.

The Director of Graduate Studies normally receives support money each year to fund graduate students going to conferences. Contact:

A sample letter is available and can be used for requesting funds from the Chancellor, the Dean of Arts and Sciences, and the Center Directors. There is also a sample budget available. The form letter can either be printed out or saved as a text file. NOTE: there are per diem dollar amounts established for meals in different cities and you should check with the Graduate Secretary.
